Off to the USA

6.45a.m., Friday, 7th July 2023 – the doorbell rang and my chauffeurs had arrived for the early morning drive to Heathrow Terminal 2. The United Airlines flight to Denver would leave at 11.05a.m. and I didn’t want to be late! The unpredictability of the M25 made it wise for both households to have three alarms set – just in case we missed one!!

Through check-in and security before 8.00a.m. so time for coffee and a wander before a leisurely walk to Gate 39A – the furthest away of course!!!

Having joked on the way to the airport about not wearing anything long sleeved and hoping it wouldn’t be too cold on the flight, it was somewhat ironic to have boarding delayed for a few minutes while they cooled the plane down – ‘currently the temperature is too high to be comfortable’!! Once on board, though, everything was very smooth despite some turbulence over the Atlantic.

Phone to the ready, these images record the journey

I’m always amazed at how much variety there is in the skies on a flight and on how much of the areas we fly over can be identified. A favourite from the past is a photo of Sydney harbour featuring the bridge, the Opera House and a myriad of small yachts but I quite like this view of Wembley, too.

Meeting someone flying from the other side of the world in an airport neither of you knows is always an adventure but this one was simple thanks to airport wifi and our phones. We met up easily, found a taxi – or rather, my first experience of an Uber! – and were in the hotel sooner than we had dared hope.

I think we both slept for at least ten hours before making a start to the new day by planning our route and deciding it would be Uber again to get us to the Alamo depot near the airport in time to pick up the car at 10am. All good enough for me to be sure the Uber app is now safely on my phone for future reference.

And the car we picked up is a lovely, comfortable, easy to drive , Toyota Prius so another first for me driving a hybrid car.

Ready to set off for Kemmerer….. just hoping it’ll be an easy drive. It really wasn’t bad but it’s late now and there’s a full day tomorrow as we drive to Yellowstone – more then,
