From Siglurfjordur to Myvatn

There were to be two highlights on the way to Lake Myvatn – Godafoss and THE cake shop that we had been told was the best in the country. That would be our coffee stop in Akureyri.

Although we had hoped to spend some time around the working harbour in Siglurfjordur the weather was such that we stopped just briefly and then moved on. Once again we were driving through snow and on well-maintained mountain roads with frequent tunnels to avoid climbing really high. Without them many of these small communities would be totally cut off in winter.

So what did the cake shop offer?

In a traditional building on the high street we found a coffee shop offering all you might want (and more than would be good for you!). The furniture was traditional and it was clear that this was a business frequented by locals as there were a number of groups sitting chatting, some knitting or crocheting in a very relaxed atmosphere. I think we all had something different: from the local apple cake speciality to this Baileys cheese cake.

A fairly leisurely break and we were off to Godafoss – and were really cold in the blizzard that came with us! The car park is seldom quite as close as I might like it to be at these places. Quite the experience, though and that justified the walk.

Godafoss

I was quite pleased to find this image among the many I took that day. There were others:

Seeing this shot, I was cross with myself for not having cleaned the lens properly – but, actually, I think the next image may explain those ‘spots’

In this image you should be able to see just how heavily it was snowing. The blobs in the middle image, I suspect, are falling snow!

We were really cold and ready to make for the hotel at Myvatn and check in. On the way we found a frozen lake with ice patterns which we were to visit again because it caught our attention so much and then it was a quiet evening in the hotel looking at each other’s photos – and, for me, creating a video for a meeting on Sunday.

We woke to sunshine! The time to explore Myvatn had arrived and we knew the itinerary here was flexible as we had three nights here. Rooms with views out over the whole area made it possible for us to anticipate what was to come.
