On from Snaefellsnes

We made it to Stykkisholmur in time to board the Baldur ferry for the three hour long crossing of Breidafjordur Bay to arrive in Brjanslaekur around 6pm. The daily ferry carries freight and foot passengers and stops at a small island in the middle of the bay to pick up anything that needs transporting.

The Baldur ferry

Today brought interesting cargo and we watched with amusement and some awe at the operator’s skill as a small jeep was taken on board. Although there had been talk of ocean life to watch out for, it was this exercise that caught our attention more than the single distant sighting of a couple of humpbacks!

By the time we landed on the Western Fjords the snow was beginning to fall – and then we spotted the Icelandic horses not far from the ferry port.

We spent a happy few minutes getting them closer and watching them try to find any ‘goodies’ that we had – but they were to be disappointed!

These long days make the impossible possible and, whereas we might normally be thinking ‘dusk’ at this time in the evening at home, the light here is still strong enough for decent photographs so we did the obvious and stopped at a beach where the light and reflections were good.

And so to our next hotel the Fosshotel Westfjords in Patreksfjordur from where we knew some of our tour leader’s favourite locations would be visited.

That first night we decided to go out for dinner to a lovely local restaurant where, of course, the menu included ‘catch of the day’ – ling. We haven’t yet had a catch of the day declared anything other than ‘delicious’!

Beds were comfortable and a good night’s sleep prepared us for the rigours of the next day: we really hadn’t expected snow!!

  1. To tell you that it is sunny and warm at home is a bit crass after all you are clearly getting what you went for, some great pictures. Looking forward to discussing them when the critique returns.

  2. Hi Kath,
I am enjoying your journey and the great photos! Would it be possible for Bruce and Rebecca to view your post as well, please? Rebecca is leaving for a student trip to Iceland shortly.
    Thanks
