Time flies…..

Disappointingly, the lights were not performing for us that night so we all got a reasonable night’s sleep in preparation for the next day’s highlights: we were off to spend two nights in the glacier region known as Jokulsarlon. Along the way we would visit the Dyrholaey peninsula and the small but important town of Vik which has its own black sand beach, a traditionally built church sitting on high ground above the town and, reputedly, the best outdoor clothing shop in the country. We visited all three and managed lunch in a very pleasant cafe in the shopping complex.

We probably tried photographing the famous stacks from every angle except from a boat: a few examples here

Again on my phone. This time from near the clifftops car park near the lighthouse.

From Vik beach at lunchtime on the warmest ( and brightest!) day we’ve had!

The clifftop was also a good place to gain an impression of communities and their locations. There were lots of apparently isolated homes dotted across the plain.

As we drove along in the afternoon we came across a couple of places that looked as though they may be good photography spots and were not disappointed. Lots of hills of various shapes and sizes in the sun.

One of my favourite shots was this one of the hills with the menacing clouds above. And then we were there: Foss Hotel Glacier Lagoon: classy hotel and a great location for visiting the glaciers and the beaches associated with them.

I am really enjoying the fact that this tour leader takes time to get it right: he listens to weather forecasts and makes any necessary changes, so that we always get the best available light. And he lets us play: no, put your tripod here and do this! And yet, I shall come home feeling I’ve learnt a lot.
