We had decided in advance to buy Grayline hop-on, hop-off tickets to cover the three days we were in New York together. They gave us access to all routes and included the night tour which we thought would be fun as well as admission to a couple of attractions and to the Statue of Liberty and nearby Ellis Island where many immigrants were processed for admission to the USA.

On the first day we set out to validate the tickets we had bought online at the Grayline tour centre and headed to Lower Manhattan and the cruise out to lady Liberty. She’s huge!! Zoom in on the photo below and compare her size with that of the people walking around her : larger than life without doubt!!!

We had a gentle stroll around the perimeter of the base, enjoying the comparatively minute statues of people like Eiffel and Pulitzer who made the project happen along with the different angles of the lady herself and different perspectives on the NYC skyline.

A leisurely sandwich and an ice cream for sustenance and we were back on the boat heading to Ellis Island.

Although we had set out early it was mid-afternoon by now and we had to be at the theatre by 7.45p.m, so the Ellis Island visit was a bit curtailed, but still fascinating.
The bus ride back to the nearest point to our hotel seemed to last forever and after a quick change we were off to find a taxi to get to the theatre. What an eventful journey that was! Had we been in London I’d have been questioning whether the driver had ever heard of ‘The Knowledge’: he got lost twice and eventually turned the meter off because he knew he had got it wrong!
